Brighton is one place that I have always wanted to visit! I managed to go in August 2017, but we didn’t have a lot of time to explore properly. So, when I got the chance to visit Colson House, Brighton, I was very excited! We immediately started planning our trip and researched all of the great places to eat and drink.
Colson House, Brighton
Colson House is a nine-bedroomed guest house in the Kemptown area of Brighton. Famous for its LGBT scene, Kemptown is based around the thriving St. James Street and is just a short walk away from the beach and pier. The guest house is is situated on Upper Rock Gardens and is easily accessible from both the railway station and the coach station.
This 200 year old building was bought by owners Billy and John at the end of 2018. They took over the running of the guest house and are gradually renovating and decorating the building to their tastes. One of the first areas that they worked on was the reception area, which features quirky mirrors and if you’re lucky, the wagging tail of the resident dog, Zimba.
The area
Last time I stayed in Brighton, I was next to the Marina so there wasn’t a lot of independent businesses around. This time, we were in the heart of everything in Kemptown. Just at the end of the road was a pub called Black Dove where Billy took us for some delicious cocktails. There’s also a nearby Flea Market (with a visiting cat) and plenty of cute coffee shops. The walk from Colson House to Brighton Palace Pier gives you a chance to see some of the best independent businesses in the area. It took us around 15 minutes to walk from the coach station to Colson House with our bags.
Four-Poster Room
When we arrived at Colson House, we were given the option of two rooms. The first one was on the front of the building and has a double bed and a balcony. The second one was at the back of the building, has a four-poster bed and has recently been decorated. We chose the four-poster room, mainly because of the gorgeous dark blue shade of the walls and because of the size of it.
The bathroom, which was down a short corridor was a very generous size. I liked how much space there was between the bedroom and the bathroom, it added a bit more privacy. In this corridor there was also a wardrobe which had enough room for us to both unpack our bags into it. There was also plenty of room for us to walk around the bed and we had a table in the room which was handy for us to work from.
Added extras
As well as the enormous bed, we had a television, free wifi, a mini fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. This is something that is really important to me when I go away. I like to have a coffee when I first wake up before I get ready. The bathroom has a small selection of toiletries from the brand Duck Island. On the bed we had a small pack of Love Hearts each as well, it’s small touches like this which really make a stay special. Billy and John were also kind enough to give us a bottle of Prosecco which we stored in the fridge in our room.
We both had two fantastic night’s sleep in the giant bed. There was no noise from other guests or nearby traffic. Considering how close we were to the beach, I thought it would be a lot noisier.
We were both so taken with the guest house in Brighton and we have already started planning a trip back with our boyfriends in the summer. Billy and John both really made us feel at home, we really did not want to leave when the time came.
